Types of Opal Explained: Black, Boulder, Crystal & White

Australia produces around 95% of the world's opal, and "opal" isn't one thing — it's a whole family of stones, each with its own character, origin and price. Here's a clear guide to the main types, so you can choose the one that's right for you.

Black opal

The rarest and most valuable. Black opal has a dark body tone that makes its play-of-colour blaze with an intensity no other gem can match. Almost all of it comes from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales. If you want the most vivid colour and a true collector's stone, this is it. Explore black opal →

Boulder opal

Formed in the cracks of ironstone in outback Queensland, boulder opal keeps its natural brown host rock on the back — which makes it strong and gives every stone a completely one-of-a-kind shape and pattern. The second most valuable type, and a favourite for unique, characterful pieces. Explore boulder opal →

Crystal opal

Crystal opal is transparent to translucent, so light passes into the stone and its colour seems to float in three dimensions. Prized for clarity and depth — a luminous, glowing look. Explore crystal opal →

White (milky) opal

The classic opal most people picture: a light body tone with soft, pastel play-of-colour. Most comes from Coober Pedy in South Australia — practically on our doorstep — making it a fitting signature for an Adelaide jeweller, and the most accessible way to own genuine Australian opal. Doublets and triplets

These are genuine opal made more affordable. A doublet is a slice of real opal on a dark backing; a triplet adds a clear protective dome on top, making it especially hard-wearing for everyday rings. Both give you vivid opal colour at a fraction of solid-stone prices. Doublets → · Triplets →
