Opal is one of the most beautiful gemstones you can own — and with just a little care, it'll stay every bit as vivid for the rest of your life. Opal is a touch softer than stones like diamond or sapphire and holds a small amount of natural water, so it rewards gentle handling. None of this is hard; it's mostly common sense. Here's everything you need to know.
Everyday wear
The simplest rule: opal on last, opal off first. Put your jewellery on after makeup, perfume, hairspray and moisturiser, and take it off before bed. Slip opal rings off for anything rough — gardening, the gym, housework, washing up — where a knock or harsh chemical could do damage.
Opal and water
- Solid opal is fine with brief contact with water.
- Doublets and triplets should be kept out of prolonged water — long soaks, swimming, the shower — because water can eventually seep into the bonded join and cloud it.
- Never soak any opal for long periods, and avoid sudden temperature changes.
Cleaning
Gentle is the word. Use lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft cloth or soft brush, then pat dry. That's all opal ever needs. Please avoid:
- Ultrasonic cleaners — the vibration can crack opal or break a doublet/triplet bond.
- Steam cleaners and harsh chemicals — including bleach and jewellery "dip" solutions.
Storage
Store opal separately from your other jewellery — a soft pouch or a lined box — so harder stones don't scratch it. Keep it away from prolonged direct heat and very dry conditions (avoid leaving it in a hot car or sealed with strong desiccant for long periods), which over time can dry the stone out.
Rings need a little extra thought
Rings take the most knocks, so they're where care matters most. A protected setting (like a bezel) helps, and triplets are a great choice for everyday wear thanks to their hard protective cap. Save more delicate solid-opal pieces for gentler occasions.
When to bring it in
If your opal ever looks cloudy, the stone feels loose, or a claw looks worn, have it checked sooner rather than later — small things are easy to fix before they become big ones. We're always happy to clean and check any opal piece, re-tip claws, or re-set a stone.
