Australian Triplet Opals are wafers of precious opal that due to thier fragility have to be protected by an upper capping of quartz and an underlying foudation of potch or other common opal host rock before being set within jewellery.
While the thin wafers of precious opal within triplets still display the full vibrancy and same play-of-colour as a solid opal, thier price is often much lower as there is far less precious opal present within the final gemstones, allowing for wonderfully appealing jewellery at much lower prices.
